Strategic guides for mission-driven organizations

We help good people doing great work communicate like the humans they are.

We’re Design Rangers. We help you discover who you really are, then find the words to say it.

Clarity first. Everything else follows.

The challenge

Organizations that give a damn often sound...

kind of the same.

Jargon-filled mission statements that could apply to anyone. Websites written by committee. Acronyms everywhere. Internal language that leaves your audience confused and overwhelmed.

When passionate organizations don’t communicate clearly, fewer people get the help they need. Fewer volunteers show up. Fewer donors engage. Your own team struggles to explain why the work matters. Good work stays invisible.

When you tell your story in your voice, you don’t just get better marketing. You reach more people who believe what you believe. You build stronger connections. You multiply the good you can do.

That’s the ripple effect you’re after.

“I walked in assuming we already knew what we needed, and walked out with a clearer story and strategy than we had ever imagined. Jenny and Chris have a gift for getting a room full of people with different agendas actually talking, then distilling all of that messy thinking into strategy and language you can use the next day.”

Our approach

Guides, not gurus.

Your authentic DNA is already there – scattered across your organization, buried in jargon, or sitting in the heads of people who’ve never been asked the right questions.

We invite everyone to the table, and then we listen – connecting the dots hidden in plain sight. We reflect it back in ways that make people say, “That’s what we’ve been trying to say the whole time, but just couldn’t find the words!” (Actual client quote) Then we work alongside you to make it real, creating frameworks and resources you can start using right away.

01

Permission to pause

A structured space to slow down with expert guides. Unexpected questions get asked, people feel seen, patterns emerge, and passion comes to the forefront. Strategic work should be engaging, not exhausting.

02

Clarity through curation

What makes you distinctly you already exists. We help you see the whole picture, gather what matters, and let go of what doesn’t. In a world where AI can generate anything, what sets you apart is knowing what to keep.

03

Prototype the path

Visual prototypes, messaging examples, and user flows are just some of the tools in our toolbox. Instead of imagining what’s possible, watch it take shape.

“The Rangers make you look in the mirror and see things you never noticed before or thought were irrelevant. Despite a professional tenure of over a decade, we continue to find big and little things that keep us moving forward with the Rangers.”

No theoretical reports. Just practical tools that show the way forward.

A messaging guidebook

Outfitting you for your journey

User flow, site structure, visual explorations, functional prototypes – bridging the gap between strategy and execution

“This opportunity allowed us to transform our thinking about our work, our community and how to better tell our story. I continue to use the verbiage and ideas shared in my grants on a daily basis.”

How we work.

We’re not consultants who hand you a strategy deck and disappear. We’re not designers who ask “what colors do you like?” We’re strategic guides who meet you where you are, reveal your true challenges, and find creative ways to solve them.

Camps

These aren’t boring meetings. They’re focused (but fun) working sessions. Usually a few hours, sometimes a full day. We create space for you to pause, think strategically, and reconnect with the work that matters most.

The hardest questions are the simple ones: what is this for, who is it for, and why does it matter?

Every Camp produces a deliverable — a framework, a guide, a map, or a recommendation your team can reference and use right away.

a few of our Core camps

Camp Counseling

Everyone starts here. You know your work matters, but saying why out loud comes out humble, vague, or different from every person on your team. Leave with what you believe and the key messages that flow from it.

Personality Camp

It’s hard to see yourself the way other people see you. Name the traits that make you recognizable, and decide how they show up in everything you do.

Brand Voice Camp

By the time everyone has weighed in, your writing doesn’t sound like anyone. Find language that sounds like you. Something your whole team can actually use, from grant applications to the homepage.

Structure Camp

Your programs, services, and web pages made sense as they grew. Just not to anyone outside. Organize them around what people came to do: give, volunteer, sign up, or find help.

Prototyping & visualization

Nobody can react to a description. Everyone pictures something different, and the original intent quietly gets lost.

Camps decide who you are and who you’re for. Prototypes decide what it looks like and how it works. You react to the actual thing instead of imagining it.

Messaging & content development

Knowing what to say is not the same as communicating it. Most teams leave a Camp clear and still stall on the blank page.

Camps help you define your Why, How and What. This is where they become homepage copy, a grant paragraph, a program description, and templates anyone can use without having to call us.

Ongoing strategic partnerships

Some of our best work happens over years, not months.

Long-term relationships create long-term success. We lead quarterly sessions, review campaigns, get new hires up to speed on the voice, and spot what’s hard to see from inside.

Clients tell us it stops feeling like hiring a partner and starts feeling like having someone on the team.

“Design Rangers are simply incredible! They were just what our Board of Directors needed to help us fully understand who we are and our superpowers. They listened well, asked thought-provoking questions, and gently pushed us out of our comfort zones, allowing us to dig deep.”

ABOUT US

Recovering designers, thriving strategists.

Photo of Jenny & Chris Schell in Cripple Creek, CO

Hi, we’re Jenny and Chris. We’ve owned Design Rangers since 2007.

As designers, we found that the projects with the most impact never just looked good – they had something powerful to say. So now we spend our days in rooms full of people who care, making it comfortable enough for them to be honest. We help great people doing great work communicate like the humans they are.

We’re proud community college graduates (go Aardvarks), married 26 years, and we love being a two-person team who knows your kids’ names.

Some clients have been with us more than 15 years. Sometimes we make s’mores. Sometimes clients cry happy tears in our sessions. Usually, Jenny does too.

Camp is in session.

We’ll save you a marshmallow.

Drop us a line about what you’re working on. We’ll set up a free 30-minute call to get to know each other. No pitch. No pressure. Just a conversation to see if we’re the right guides for your journey.
